Featured 2010

Each month we feature an Alberta horse who has made an impact. This may be a champion of competition or a champion in some less public way. If you have or know of a horse that is a fine example of an “Alberta Horse”, tell us why, send us a photo and each month we’ll feature one horse that stands out from the herd.

altEven though our December feature is not technically “a horse”, Windy Ridge Mister S is certainly deserving of recognition under the title of “featured equine”.

Mister S is a Canadian Donkey and Mule Association registered and inspected mammoth jack donkey. Born July 14, 1991, at Leslieville, Alberta, Mister S is the offspring of Windy Ridge Klondike Mike and Dry Gulch Sweet Nuthin. He was bred by Carl and Sybil Sewell and then purchased by Ron & Ruth Morphy of Sundown Donkey Farm, at just 4 months old. Mister S has been with the Morphys ever since.

Lord of the Ring, or “Strider” altas he’s known by his friends, was sired by the first Canadian World Grand Champion Miniature Horse, First Knight’s Bit O Hot Shot, and was the last foal for the renowned mare, Lazy N’s Rowdy Ginger. Big name, big shoes to fill, small horse.

altIt’s always nice when your kids help out with the family business, and this is just what happened for Quarter Horse stallion, Fast Moon Chic when he qualified as 2009’s leading barrel horse sire, with a little help from daughter Martha's Ebony Moon.

Lynn Danyluk was looking for just the right mare to breed to her Morgan stud, and wanted one willing and able to go all the many places that Lynn wanted to go. After viewing hundreds of fillies in her search, in November of 2003, she saw the one that just wouldn’t leave her mind. Cas-sel Canadian Classic was bred by Dwayne and Myrna Casselman of High River and was out of the Morgan mare, Brymore Mayflower, by Morgan stallion Barbeejays Destino. After so much searching, Lynn still had to qualify, as Dwayne and Myrna are very careful to select the people to purchase their horses. Luckily, she passed the test and C.C. was hers.

savanah_and_kathyIn 1998, Nightwinds Savanah was foaled at the farm of Pat and Colleen DeVry close to Lloydminster, the offspring of sire Dakotas Keyanti and dam Midnight Baroness. The DeVrys had made more than one attempt to produce an endurance prospect for Kathy Irvine and this was her favourite so far. The foal had outstanding definition, a beautiful wide head, and a sassy attitude but, although suitable in every way, it had one fatal flaw in Kathy’s mind, it would grow up to be a mare.
