When Lisa Friedenberg attended a PMU sale in the fall of 1997 looking for a young prospect, she was immediately drawn to a paint colt who stood quietly amidst the milling youngsters in his pen. BSR Master Lock was bred by Broken Springs Ranch at Buck Lake, Alberta, and a fine example of the breeding that many PMU farmers were putting into their herds. He is triple registered with the American Paint Horse Association and the US and Canadian Pinto Horse Registries. True to that first impression, Master was an incredibly easy horse to train, “born broke” is how Lisa describes him.

Master Lock has competed in open shows all over Alberta with many championships as a 4 and 5 year old in halter and performance. He has also shown reining, hunters, jumpers, dressage, cattle penning and gymkhana, and participated in parades and musical rides – a true “master” of versatility. In more recent years, Master has mainly been ridden in the mountains over the summer months where people are always surprised that such an easy going guy is a stallion.

For the past four years, he has been a competitor at the Telus Battle of the Breeds at Spruce Meadows, first as a member of Team Paint and, this past year, as captain of the new Team Canadian Pinto. Lisa trained Master to drive in the summer of 2008 and he competed in the driving segment of the Battle last fall…yet another achievement for his resumé.

Due to his excellent temperament, trainability and versatility, Lisa decided to leave Master as a stallion, with the idea that training horses like him would make her job a whole lot simpler. Over the past 8 years, he has sired many offspring, with the focus on producing all-round versatile horses with good dispositions, conformation and, as a bonus, colour. Many of Master’s progeny have been purchased by 4-H students who require versatility in their horses to compete in the various aspects of the 4-H program. His offspring also excel in open and hunter/jumper shows, one is competing at the world level in Western and a few others have moved south of the border and are competing in a variety of events in the US.

At just 12 years old, Master Lock already has more experiences and accomplishments than most horses do in their lifetime, with many competitive, recreational and breeding years ahead. If you’d like more information on BSR Master Lock, visit www.paints-plus.com.
