head shotRR Gar-Sun is a 1990 bay Arabian stallion owned by Rae Ralston of Sherwood Park. In Rae’s words, he has been a wonderful gift, a once in a lifetime horse. Although Rae did not breed his dam, she purchased her in foal, and had the pleasure of raising Gar-Sun from birth. Right from the start he let her know he was something special, his talent coming from a long line of superior performance horses, most notably Bask, Faraon, Emin by Celebes, Bandos, Nabor, Gazon, Ferzon and Surneyn.

Gar-Sun was presented as a yearling and a four year old at the now defunct Alberta Horse Improvement Program, where he attained Classified Awards both years. His show career started with reining, trained by Ron Brouwer, and his first year out as a Junior Horse he went top five at the Region 17 Championship (Western Canada). As he matured, it became apparent that his talents and movement demanded a different arena. He was shown in show hack, to Region 17 top five with Darlene Brouwer, and then dressage with Todd Ehret, earning three Canadian Arabian National Dressage Championships and two U.S. Arabian National top tens.

RR Gar-SunWith the advent of the Sport Horse Division in the Arabian show world, Gar-Sun continued to excel under the capable hands of trainer Sandra Fenstad-Sanche. This was absolutely his forum. An amazing performance horse, he continued to acquire many regional championships, reserves and top fives in dressage (up to Level III), show hack, sport horse under saddle, and has the distinction of being undefeated Region 17 Sport Horse Stallion in Hand, both open and amateur. At age 16 Gar-Sun was shown at the Arabian Sport Horse Nationals in Boise, Idaho, where he earned four top ten placings in fields of up to 72 horses.

Gar-Sun consistently passes on his superior disposition, presence, great movement and athletic ability to his offspring, who are excelling in their performance careers with Regional, Canadian National, and Scottsdale championships, reserves and top fives and tens to their credit. He is an Arabian Horse Association Sweepstakes nominated stallion and participates in the Sport Horse National Payback Programme. He was presented for inspection to the Canadian Trakehner Horse Society and was approved as a breeding stallion in their stud books. Out of six categories, he attained four scores of 8 and two of 7. The inspectors were thrilled to approve him.

garsun temperamentGar-Sun has now retired from the show ring, but is still regularly in the public eye. With his impeccable manners, he is often used in demonstrations and has proudly represented the Arabian breed at several horse information displays and projects, including the Manitoba Winter Fair, where he has patiently accepted the adoration, inspection, petting and hugs from special needs fans, rambunctious children, knowing horsemen, and teary-eyed seniors.
