Canadian Warmblood, Gala Jabari is a 2003 gelding bred and owned by Gala Ranch in central Alberta. He is by the Canadian Warmblood stallion Gala Printz out of a black and white Canadian Pinto mare, W.L. Lisa's Command. Gala Ranch owners Cheryl Larue and Niels Lausten had Jabari started as a 3 year old and took him to his first show as a hunter where he placed Baby Reserve Hunter champion. After this short foray into the hunter world, he was ridden primarily on the trails, at least until 2007, when he was exposed to the sport of mounted shooting.

Warmblood horses are considered the elite in the world of sport horses, but when the sport is mounted shooting, that’s a little unusual. For those who are not familiar, mounted shooting is a relatively new sport to Canada, and sees competitors shoot at balloon targets while riding their horses through a designated pattern and racing against the clock. It can take time for horses to become comfortable with the gunfire, up to a year, but Jabari took to it right away.

After such a successful start, in 2008 Cheryl and Niels began competing with Jabari seriously, taking him to Idaho where Niels and Jabari placed 4th in their class. They then competed in Montana and placed 3rd. By this time the team had accumulated enough points to allow them to compete at the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association’s World Championship in Amarillo, Texas. They competed in the Cavalry Class where they finished 8th out of 32, and then won the International Men’s World title.

So it seems this particular 16.3 hh Warmblood has a rather different career path than most of his breed, but still one that calls on the athleticism and solid temperament that his ancestors are known for. Jabari is now in training at the Towsend Ranch in Montana with Tammy Townsend, the current world record holder in mounted shooting. With the Canadian Cowboy Mounted Shooters hosting the Western Canadian Shootout in Olds this year, we expect Jabari will be ready to take on the competition.
